What’s in Your Well

This subject has been a long time coming for me “waiting on God’s OK” to write about it. You see I’m kind of sensitive to this gross contempt that people have formed for each other. Being a member of the Baby Boomer’s Generation, we seem to have a more hospitable outlook towards fellow humans than say the Generation X, Millennial or Centennial Generations. As a southern Baby Boomer, I’ve watched us virtually eradicate the human civility once known to the world, in less than 75 years. Don’t hear what I’m not saying, there are still some good old boy’s around, but they are becoming fewer and farther between.
What’s happening, one might ask? Truth is, it didn’t just happen overnight! It started long before the Baby Boomers and will not stop at Centennials (unless we change). It seems the thirsty of each generation, which goes to the parental well of wisdom, will find it lacking more so than the generation before. Especially when it comes to the children who seek to draw wisdom from the spiritual well! They have found and are finding our wells difficult to draw from, as the contents are low, contaminated, and often empty. The bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6 (NLT), Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. This can’t be done from an empty or contaminated well! We can’t give away, teach or share that which we don’t own!
Over the years we’ve fallen into the trap of gaining things of earthly value under the guise of wanting our children to have what we didn’t growing up or wanting more so we can give more to charity. Whatever the reason, we steal time from God, we rob our children and we lie to ourselves, in lieu of a better life for all. We fall prey to and sometimes even develop earthly excuses in order to evade our ignorance in spiritual matters, and our inadequacies of life. Not good! The bible reads in Mark 4:22 (NLT), For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Preparing ourselves, our children, family, friends and neighbors to face this world with God’s glory is absolutely the best we can do.
I have been fascinated at how people, especially parents can say I love my children and yet never prepare them for what this world has instore. They are just children and can’t see (as a lot of adults can’t) how the past can be a great teacher through its failures. Again, the bible tells us in Romans 15:4 (NLT), Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. Is this what is in our “well of wisdom”? Jesus said in John 4:14 (NLT), But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” Will what’s in your well entice people to seek Jesus?
The answer I pray YES! But first we must know how much and of what is in our well. If it is empty, we are little to no good for anything therefore it must be filled, on the other hand, should it already be filled with contamination (hate, fear, prejudice and unbelief) which destroys the peace of our soul and must first be emptied, cleansed and refilled with the love of Jesus before peace can be resurrected within us. Should it be filled with the love of Jesus and vibrant with life, we are acceptable to do kingdom work. This is a message worthy to be passed on, one to another. What Is in My Well? Is it worthy to be a drink offering to God?
Should we find out that’s it’s not what or where it should be, what must one do to get our water worthy? One thing is for sure! Humans do not possess the where-with-all to purify the soul through our own resources. Yet we all are faced with the truth in Psalm 51:5 (NLT), For I was born a sinner yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. Our well is contaminated from the git go and can only go dry once we straddle the fence (choose to ignore it). However, at the moment we trust God it’s filled with the love of Jesus (living water) which overflows from us causing everything about and around us to flourish in God’s goodness. This is what we are to pass along as is written in Psalm 145:4 (NLT), Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.
God is the master of reaping and sowing as 1 Thessalonians 5: examples in verses 9-11 (NLT), 9 For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. 10 Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. We are God’s crop waiting to be harvested that our sown seed may continue to mature in The Good News of, Romans 10:9 (NLT), If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. I plead with all to test the water in your well and follow the steps God gives you for purification. Then, Colossians 3:16 (NLT), Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
My prayer today is that of Paul the Apostle, written to the Church in Colossae found in, Colossians 2:2-3 (NLT), 2 I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. 3 In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
