Keep It Spiritually Simple!

Sunday’s Monday

KISS! What a simple acronym! Yes. I am aware that this started as a great tool in the hands of our enemy. You see every time the words passed through our minds and then came out our mouths, our self-confidence was being diminished a little more with each use of this derogatory use of one word. For those who may have fallen behind the original phrase was “keep it simple stupid” and I was an avid user of it until God warned me, that’s enough, I didn’t create anything to be stupid. Look at 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NLT), Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” To which I believe the power is multiplied because we are saying this about ourselves. God gave me the thought to give that meaning a 180° turn around and have it speak a positive message to us. You know, like that old saying turn that frown upside down. My version of the KISS method is, Keep It Spiritually Simple! That is it! It is a simple one-word change that keeps us from confessing stupidity every time we repeat the phrase. In a sense, we are obeying God's word in Matthew 6:33 (NLT), Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. All too often little things such as this go completely unnoticed because we get so distracted by stuff.

It seems today's culture would have us seeking spiritual gifts before spiritual growth. Our society seems to be ever so slowly sinking into a something-for-nothing culture. I have noticed over my 74 years that progress is an insatiable monster, people get fat, lazy, and comfortable. My pet peeve has always been: People won’t come to church in the summertime. So rather than motivate the people to do God’s will, many churches elect to close their doors on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. (In my way of thinking) the faithful few that would be there could get excited enough to talk about the meeting during their daily events, and people would soon get interested. The Keep It Spiritually Simple! I told my pastor years ago that the people of this church will only maintain the level of interest and excitement that the pastor carries. If you’re seeking an energetic crowd to preach to, then become excited! As it reads in Mark 10:14 (NLT), When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. Their faith allows them to Keep It Spiritually Simple because we haven’t had time to teach them to doubt; yet!

Dejectedly, I have to admit that the world is gaining ground in enticing many of us to complicate that which Jesus has made so easy. Jesus has a request that He gave  several times in the scriptures Matthew 4:19 (NLT), Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”  And again in Matthew 16:24 (NLT), Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. Then in Matthew 4:18-20 (NLT), One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him. Vah-la! The Keep It Spiritually Simple came to light. They didn’t overthink what Jesus said, they simply acted on what they had heard.

Great day to you Dad; I surely thank you for it! I ask Father that you open our eyes, flood hearts, and raise our concerns about who we are, why are we here, and most of all what we are doing. Are we using the kiss method to draw them in, does our life reflect you when we don’t know we’re being watched, or are we adding to the confusion that floods the church today? Are we actors performing for the rapture or are we mimes toward doing what Jesus is instructing us to do? Lord, I ask you to help me remove this adult covering so that this faith-filled child can shine through on someone’s life this week drawing them near to Your Holy Spirit. Dad, I’m asking that you remove all the unnecessary ways that I have evolved and bring me back to Jesus+nothing=everything! “If I can live you, especially when I don’t know anyone is looking, I will have arrived. Remind me, Dad, that it is not the scripture I have memorized, the beautiful long prayers I can spout, or my church service that you seek. It is my heart intertwined with yours that will allow our relationship to grow. Lord, it kind of breaks my heart to hear people so ready to give up on the people of this world, as they pray and beg for the rapture to come. Please help me to understand that one as we walk! Thanks, Dad. Amen
